Unsolicited phone calls purporting to be from the IRS, FinCEN, the FBI, police or any other government agency are SCAMS
We are all taught to respect authority, so it is scary to get a call from someone who pretends to be from a government agency. Again, it is critical that you verify the identity of the person who is asking to speak with you. Scammers use our innate trust of authority figures to catch us off guard and get out personal identifying or financial information. First, don’t answer the call. Second, unless you have reached out to the government agency requesting something, the call/voicemail is likely a scam. Third, if you are unsure and think call/voicemail may be legitimate, find a phone number for the agency and call direct.
